These photos are from the 9/11 TV Archive, NBC 9:54-10:36
I've added white circles to show the areas where the smoke can be seen.


Above: before smoke is evident.


Above: smoke starting to waft to the left of tower 2.


Above: whitish smoke is evident to the left of tower 2 and on the side facing us above building 7.


If we look at a map of ground zero we can see that the dark building in front of the towers is Building 7. The smoke is coming up to the left of Building 7 and above it.


ABC shows the smoke too, it's whitish, and we can see lots of it above building 7.
See how much lighter tower 2 looks compared to tower 1? That's the smoke.
